eLetters: Teaching children to be responsible with alcohol

  • L. Bell · 1 year ago
Mr. Harvey makes an interesting proposal regarding exposing our children to alcohol.

On the surface, his proposal sounds somewhat convincing. But on deeeper evaluation, we have a concern about his idea.

Using this same reasoning.....would it also be wise to "teach children a responsible relationship to pornography, by removing the 'forbiddden fruit' status"??

Should we also expose our children to pornography in the home??

The best way to have your kids binging on alcohol is to make it forbidden during highschool, then shipping the child off to college one summer after HS graduation.

College immediately following high school is just unsupervised high school, where alcohol is one fake ID away, peer pressure and drinking games create binge drinking that instills the idea of fun. A good night is one where you puked, and crawled home. Then this template is applied to the rest of adulthood, at least for the thinking impaired set.

Without this template, drinking until you feel terrible is not usually considered "fun".

There's noplace like the truth to begin in exposing ones children to the dangers and benifits of all the commonly used recreational drugs, I.E. alcohol, tobacco and marijuana. Alcohol, despite the madison avenue campaign glorifying alcohol use, the stuff is mildly addictive, dangerously powerful, and has a compulsive element that calls for more alcohol compulsively after a certain dose which can lead to overdose and death. Tobacco, which though has a much milder high is highly addictive and many find it impossible to quit until the long term effect kills them through cancer stroke or heart attack. Marijuana, which is psychologicaly addictive I.E. one may enjoy it so much one may tend to consume it obsessively, and can lead to the destruction of ones life by the authorities because the bigots in power have targeted pot smokers historically as they tend to be people who tend outside the mainstream of politically correct thought, I.E. jazz musicians through beatnicks to hippies, people always hated by the traditionaly bigoted "family values" crowd. I hope this information will be of use to parents confused about how to prepare their children for the adult world of recreational drug use.

Alcohol is so very easy to start. Wether ones been influenced by parents or not!
My late husband & I found it to be a LEGAL method of dealing with daily stress, anxiety & worries.
Only problem was we had never heard of any HEALTH problems that goes hand in hand with the crap !!!
All alcohol contains sufficient drug power to dish out, basically ANY illness it wants. With 99% of them having NO cures! Therefore you end up having your mid life destroyed quickly !!! If NOT before !!
Now, do you want that for anyones children ???
    I sure don't !!!
